Sample Responses to Federal Government's Cosmetics Survey

Use the following responses provided by a very gracious Toxic Nation E-News reader to complete the federal government’s survey on modernizing its cosmetic regulations.

Here are my key changes I see fit to set Canada as a star on the world stage in Cosmetic safety!

I am a woman of Canada, a wife and mother. Our kids are worth it, tighten up and set world standards by avoiding the sale of cosmetics with the following…… 1,4-Dioxane a known breast carcinogen. As well no sodium lauryl sulfate due to the fact it is usually contaminated with dioxane.

2-Bromo-2Nitropropane-1,3-Diol (or Bronopol), BHA, DMDM Hydantoin, Oxybenzone, Triclosan, Boric Acid and Sodium Borate, Dibutyl Phthalate, Toluene. The word “Fragrance” needs further explanation. A huge reminder that Fluoride is a neurotoxin when swallowed! Ceteareth and PEG Compounds. Parabens, triethanolamine, dyes, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone as well as Iodopropynyl Butycarbamate, Benzyl Alcohol and finally Isopropyl Alcohol.

My Recommended Changes would be to have Health Canada be a world leader in Cosmetic safety for all of our products. If we had 2 markets of cosmetics “Health Canada “approved (avoiding all the ingredients I listed in 2.1) and general cosmetics (including the imported cosmetics where regulation is different), this would be sure we are not further crushing our freedom of enterprise, and allowing people to choose what they want. I want to be a mom, not a manic label reading scientist.

Ensure words like “fragrance” are not used but rather described (What is in Fragrance?) As well if an ingredient like sodium lauryl sulfate is used describe that is has been linked being contaminated with Dioxane. Doesn’t the state of California have tons of information on this; I think you should contact them. When a product like sodium lauryl sulfa can be known by over 150 different names, this is where the Mom hat has gotten too heavy! Help a Canadian Momma out PLEASE!!!!!!

Make an application process to sell a cosmetic in Canada, prior to the sale, have a scanning process in place that can pick up on “Hot” words in the ingredients list as well as to submit samples, upon request and tell cosmetic businesses that they are subject to submit samples upon request.

I understand this is a huge undertaking with a huge cost. However we must look at the cost it will incur on the health care systems with scantly regulation on widely used products. I feel a world data base of products that are considered harmful may be a start. Places like Cosmeticdatebase.com are a start however one must also be aware about who funds this. I wish I had a clear answer. I think if we had manufacturers at least label the possible effects of using a product/chemical like the state of California does maybe a great start.

Trend 1
I feel that the greatest trend and issue is in products for children. As a mother I worry about what I am doing with these products and how it will affect them as they grow & reproduce. Have manufacturers label what the possible effects of using a product/chemical, like the state of California does. At least fair warning if given and the consumer can make a choice without getting a Masters in Science.

Trend 2
A lot of adult/teen cosmetic products are also awful, especially mascaras. Consumers have a right to know what chemicals can do to you. Have manufacturers label what the possible effects of using a product/chemical, like the state of California does. At least fair warning if given and the consumer can make a choice without getting a Masters in Science.

As a consumer and a mother I feel the time is now to make a change. Canadians deserve better, most of all our children deserve to know and deserve better. Please feel free to contact me if you require more information. I appreciated the opportunity to share my opinions and I hope I made a difference.

My sincere thanks for this opportunity to have a voice.
